Have a look into an iPhone - todays SIM card design need a significant amount of space inside a mobil device. Delivering an increasing number of features todays mobile devices get short on space and space gets more valuable. Therefor the 4FF card (fourth form factor) will be 40% smaller than the current Micro-SIM - only 12,3mm wide by 8.8mm high and 0,67 thick. And the best - it will be backwards compatible with existig SIM card designs and offer the same functionality as current SIM cards.
This mean that you can use the Nano-SIM also on older devices with 3FF or even 2G slots by using our adapters for nano-sim. Apple proposed the nano-SIM first and the idea was heavy opposed by a number of manufacturers. Finally Apple made some changes in there design and the opposing carriers mad changes as well bringing there designs much closer to Apple. imgfloat
In the end Apple's design and Motorolas are exactly the same exterior dimensions - the difference is that the update of Motorola includes the possibility to enable so called "push-push" mechanisms in SIM slots. Apple has won a battle over the standard for a smaller SIM card, use of which would leave more room for other components in future phone designs
The European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) has announced a new nano-SIM format. Agreed at a meeting in Japan, the new form factor will be 40 percent smaller than the current micro-SIM format — measuring 12.3mm wide by 8.8mm high, and 0.67mm thick. Nano-SIMs will also be packaged in a way that allows them to be backwards compatible with existing SIM card designs.
The credit card-sized SIM was generation one followed by the present standard sized SIM and than the third generation SIM - the 3FF, mircro-SIM or Mini-UICC was approaching. After less than two years there is an other step done - we are now looking for the new Nano-SIM. It again is much smaller, even though the contact-area is the same. Actually there are no devices on the market using the Nano-SIM - the first to be expected is the new iPhone 5.
